Exclusive interview

07 Dec

Our friends over at eFestivals recently had a chat with the man behind the line-up at Summer Sundae Weekender, Rob Challice from Coda Agency.

You can read the interview in full HERE.

The wait is over

30 Nov

Details of Summer Sundae Weekender's 10th anniversary have now been confirmed and we are pleased to announce that Early Bird tickets will go on sale on Tuesday 12th January 2010.

The festival will take place on 13th, 14th and 15th August 2010 at De Montfort Hall & Gardens in Leicester.

2009 saw Summer Sundae Weekender achieve record ticket sales and with the 10th anniversary coming up we're hopeful that 2010 will be another fantastic year.

Please keep checking back here for all of your ticket, line-up and general festival news and updates.

Thank you

06 Nov

A big Thank You to everybody who voted for Summer Sundae Weekender in the UK Festival Awards.

The winners will be announced at the ceremony which takes place on Thursday 19th November at Indigo2 in London.

We need your votes

23 Oct

We need your votes to help Summer Sundae Weekender win the Best Small Festival award after being shortlisted in the UK Festival Awards.

Summer Sundae has a successful history with the awards and emerged trimphant in this category in 2006. We would love your help to make 2009 another winning year and secure Leicester’s importance in the UK festival calendar.

Even more reason to vote is the opportunity to win two 2010 tickets to every festival that wins an award, which will hopefully include a pair of tickets to Summer Sundae Weekender! Make sure to register your votes before Wednesday 4th November by visiting www.festivalawards.com. The prestigious awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 19th November at London’s Indigo2 venue.

2009 was a fantastic year for Summer Sundae with ticket sales up 15% on 2008 and more punters than ever before coming through the festival gates into the expanded site, resulting in both Saturday and Sunday being a total sell-out.

The festival continued its tradition for showcasing the best in up and coming and established acts, whether at the Indoor Stage you were dancing away to recent UK number 1 Chipmunk or Kanye West’s protégé Mr Hudson, or at the Rising Stage singing along to current Radio 1 favourite Frank Turner, or perhaps down at the front of the Main Stage reminiscing whilst watching The Charlatans work their magic, there was an act for everybody this year. Throw in a superb comedy line-up courtesy of Leicester Comedy Festival, a brand spanking new Film Tent programmed by Phoenix Square, a fantastic new family area in The Garden and even a Silent Disco to keep the dancing going into the early hours, it all went into making Summer Sundae Weekender the not to be missed party of the summer!

Thanks for your votes!

UK Festival Awards

05 Oct

The nominations are in and we're chuffed to pieces that Summer Sundae has been nominated in 3 categories at this year's UK Festival Awards!  This year we're vying for Best Small Festival, Family Festival Award and the oh so glamorous (yet still important) Best Toilets.

Festivalgoers can now register their votes at www.festivalawards.com and by doing so will enter themselves into a draw to win two tickets to every festival that wins an award.  Hopefully this will include a pair of tickets to Summer Sundae Weekender 2010 (our 10th anniversary don't you know)!

On Wednesday 14th October the 10 finalists in each category will be announced. Public voting will then continue ahead of the prestigious awards ceremony held on Thursday 19th November at London’s Indigo2 venue.

If you have a spare 2 minutes we'd really appreciate your votes!

Thanks!

Goodbye SSW 2009...HELLO 2010!

31 Aug

...for how else would you describe a festival that had our biggest acts yet, the biggest turnout we've ever had (and in these recession-mad times, no less) and the most glorious weather?? Yes, SSW 2009 proved to be unforgettable, and it was down to you, dear punters. But now we must look ahead to 2010...who do you think should be on the bill? Who are the hot young acts you're tipping? And who should absolutely NOT be on the bill? Go to our SSW twitter and speculate and gesticulate wildly! And see you all next year! x

The sun comes out for a glorious Saturday at SSW...

16 Aug

Aside from the glorious weather and the excitable masses, there was, of course, amazing music. The Joy Formidable kicked the main stage into high gear with delirious versions of songs like Austere and Cradle, while, over in the phrased and confused tent, the rapidly ascendant Beth Jeans Houghton braved the heat and sound difficulties to enchant the crowds with her gorgeously off kilter folk.

Brooklyn based duo Golden Animals were scuzzy 60's psychedelic highlights at the musician's stage, while the likes of Broken Records and Bombay Bicycle Club ignited the first moshing and crowdsurfing of the day. In the evening, the indestructible Saint Etienne dazzled with a set of their immortal greatest hits (which ended with Sarah Cracknell changing the words of He's On The Phone from Leicester Square to Leicester, De Montfort Hall) and the Charlatans united young and old audiences alike with their inimitable brand of baggy pop.

But it was the double header of Mr Hudson and Chipmunk the kids flocked to in the indoor stage, and they didn't fail to impress; Mr Hudson's Supernova sounded as chest swelling euphoric as ever, while Chipmunk played a dizzyingly potent megamix of all his catchiest songs, including Chip Diddy Chip, Diamond Rings and, of course, Tiny Dancer. A thunderous end to the day, most would agree. Now roll on Sunday..

Exclusive film screening at Summer Sundae

15 Aug

An exclusive showing of a new music film is being screened tonight in the Phoenix Square Film Tent.

All Tomorrow’s Parties is a kaleidoscopic journey into the parallel musical universe of the cult music festival of the same name.

The DIY concert film features performances from artists including: Battles, Sonic Youth, Belle And Sebastian, Patti Smith, Animal Collective, Grinderman, Iggy and the Stooges, Portishead, Mogwai, Slint, Grizzly Bear, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Gossip, Daniel Johnston and The Boredoms.

Produced by Luke Morris, the film is a semi-found bricolage made from Super8, camcorder and mobile phone footage contributed by over 200 filmmakers, fans and musicians over the festival’s recent history, with key contributions from co-director Jonathan Caouette (Tarnation) and cinematographer Vincent Moon (The Take Away Shows, Arcade Fire).

All Tomorrow’s Parties is a fiercely independent festival that many music lovers regard as one of the most important music events in the world. In an intimate and communal atmosphere, free of corporate sponsorship, it serves up a heady combination of alternative music, crazy golf and chalet-living, with musicians and fans living side by side.  At each festival a band or artist is chosen to gather up their favourite artists who perform over a weekend in an out-of-season holiday camp by the sea.  Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore described the festival as the ‘ultimate mix tape’.

All Tomorrow’s Parties will be screened today (Saturday) at 9pm in the Phoenix Square Film Tent

The film will have a UK multi-platform release this October.

Idlewild rock the main stage

14 Aug

Check out Idlewild on the Summer Sundae main stage. They took over the slot last minute from The Streets who had to cancel their gig because their bass player had swine flu. We hope he gets better soon. Idlewild did an amazing job of closing the main stage on the first full day of the festival. There's much more to come.

Gold Panda replace Fanfarlo

13 Aug

Gold Panda are the latest band who will be taking to the stage at Summer Sundae Weekender. They will be playing on Friday on the Rising Stage at 17.45 and replace previous-billed performers Fanfarlo who have had to cancel their slot due to illness.

Check them out at http://www.myspace.com/goldpanda

Come on in, the site's lovely!

13 Aug

The site is shaping up, campers are arriving and we're looking forward to a rollicking good weekend of music, fun and general excitement.

Check out this techies' eye view of the main stage site. It won't be this empty for long...

Find your hero with a thousand favours

13 Aug

A  locksmith, first-aider, newsagent, beautician and haberdasher all wrapped in one, Favour Friend - a real-life hero to festival revellers across the country - is set to swoop down at Summer Sundae Weekender, to help all those in need of a favour.

Created by v, the National Young Volunteers Service, Favour Friend will be equipped with a suit carrying a wide range of domestic artillery that will provide the public with everything they could need. From mobile chargers and toothpaste to blankets, tent-repair kits, maps, glow sticks and toilet-paper dispensers, Favour Friend will be able to lend a hand to anyone who asks for assistance – no favour will be too big or small.

Favour Friend will also become the festivals’ resident Town Crier, passing on the latest news, showbiz gossip and sports updates to anyone wanting to know.  The one-stop place for every festival need, Favour Friend has volunteered to help out all those wanting an angst-free experience while running to catch The Streets, Zutons, The Charlatans and many more on stage.

Check out the v inspired big purple bus, next to the main stage. It's packed with the latest technology and computer equipment where you can make your own video and lots more fancy things.

The Favour Friend ideahas been developed by v as part of its Outdoor Favour campaign to show teens and young adults how fun and easy it is to do a favour for someone, no matter the size of the gesture. The campaign has been touring the UK’s hottest festivals to help inspire the nation’s 16-25 year olds to spend some time volunteering.

v’s Chief Executive Terry Ryall said:  ‘V is committed to creating great experiences for young people and Favour Friend is no different. The initiative is our way of showing how simple and easy it is to do others a favour and the fun you can have yourself whilst doing it.”

Phoenix Film Tent at SSW 09...

30 Jul

Yes indeed, each day the Phrased and Confused tent will transform into a marquee which can hold over 150 people to screen a specially selected programme of feature films and shorts, ranging from stone cold classics like This Is Spinal Tap and the Rocky Horror Picture Show to a super rare airing of the ground-breaking documentary about the legendary music event known as All Tomorrow’s Parties. To go with the glorious atmosphere of the festival, this will be an action- packed, lovingly curated selection of mostly music-themed cinema, thereby providing festival-goers with the opportunity to mix and match their love of live music with a collection of films both old and new.

Opening in November, Leicester’s new Phoenix Square digital media centre will provide the movies that will be shown on the Film Tent’s big screen via state-of-the-art digital projection. EM Media, the Regional Screen Agency for the East Midlands, has provided financial and programming support to the Film Tent.

So make sure you don't miss out on this extraordinary experience...

JENNY LEWIS PULLS OUT OF SSW...

They are replacing Noisettes, who unfortunately had to pull out of the festival due to clashing US commitments...a decision the band's management assures us was "not taken lightly".

Phrased & Confused is back

08 Jun

Showcasing some of the UK’s finest poets, MCs, musicians and songwriters, this year’s Phrased & Confused tent promises a lyrical feast for music lovers and secret wordsmiths alike.

Over three days, the guys and girls at Phrased & Confused will be serving up a whole host of wordy delights – with songs, poems, readings, conversations and whatever else you want to call it. Their mission?  To showcase some of the finest songwriters and poets who you’ll hopefully go on to treasure and tell the world about… Oh, and to bring back Fridge Poetry and those mp3-stuffed usb wristbands (last year’s must-have Summer Sundae fashion accessory!)

Similarly to last year, they're also pretty chuffed to be able to commission four artists to write new pieces especially for this year’s Festival (thank you Arts Council England!).  The application deadline has just passed but keep checking back to the website for updates on who will be appearing!

mum, BLK JKS join the Drowned in Sound stage!

22 May

Now, they've announced that South African dub-fusionists BLK JKS, and Icelanders múm are the final additions to their stage at Summer Sundae.

múm will headline, and BLK JKS will join My Latest Novel, Fanfarlo and Dananananakroyd who were announced last week as the first three acts. It's BLK JKS' only UK festival appearance, so it should be a pretty special one.

MORE ANNOUNCEMENTS!!!

12 May

Where to even begin? What about with the addition of the inimitable Jenny Lewis, in her only UK festival appearance this year? We can also announce that The Airborne Toxic Event have joined the bill. You may not have heard the name, but you certainly would have heard their ubiquitous hit single “Sometime Around Midnight”, a perfect exemplar of their knack of combining heart destroying lyrics with grand, uplifting rock and roll.  Speaking of which, the immortal Idlewild are back, and hitting up Leicester with the full force of their spiky, effervescent brand of rock. This year’s festival will also see the return of the New Beautiful South, down a member but no less gloriously melodic and beautiful than before.

Which is not to say there won’t be music to dance to. Enter Mr Hudson, riding a wave of Kanye West approved hype. The irrepressible Filthy Dukes, will be bringing their distinctive blend of “electroacidhousenuravetwisteddiscopunkfunk” (their words) to Leicester, along with hip hop rudeboys Kid British, widely hailed as the best new band in Manchester. Flashguns will also be storming the stages, as will the deliciously louche, wildly addictive retro pop stylings of The Cheek (or Cheeky Cheeky and the Nosebleeds, as they used to be known) and rough and ready Scottish indie types The Dykeenies.

And of course, Drowned in Sound have made their first round of announcements, and they are the staggering triumvirate of Fanfarlo, My Latest Novel and Dananananakroyd. Marvellously inventive, gloriously romantic, and wildly unconventional, respectively, and a perfect start to what is sure to be an unforgettable lineup.

For those who need a breather, there’s mellower, lushly beautiful stylings from the legendary likes of 27-year old folk wunderkind Devon Sproule, the wickedly acerbic and highly original Emmy the Great, and the quirkily innovative singer-songwriter David Thomas Broughton, who uses samples, looped guitars and drum machines to create his idiosyncratic vein of folk music.

And there’s much more besides. For something a little different, check out Easy Star All Stars, reggae musicians who “reinterpret” seminal albums like Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” and Radiohead’s “OK Computer” in their own offbeat dub style, or the Israeli garage rock racket of Monotonix. And don’t forget the Phrased and Confused stage either, with performances from hotly tipped UK chanteuse Beth Jeans Houghton and Transgressive Records poster boy Jeremy Warmsley, among others.

Added all up, it becomes one of the most thrilling and compelling festival lineups you’re likely to find anywhere this summer. Time to book that ticket to Leicester? You know it…

NME. Clash, Artrocker and more give us some love

08 May

NME sez: "this marvellous mini three - dayer do one hell of a good job creating some "in a field in the middle of nowhere" vibes...The Charlatans, the Zutons and the Streets are all on hand to provide yer hits, but there's also an extremely impressive array of rising stars".

Also, Clash ranks us no. 8 in their must-attend festivals and say "innocent fun all round", while Artrocker praises us for the "enviable green ethos" and advises festivalgoers to "pack a picnic and pray for sunshine". Yes indeedy! x

SSW is even more exciting this year!

08 May

...but you'd also be partly wrong. For this year, true to its ethos of having a little something for everybody, it's introducing the Garden, a family sanctuary in the middle of the grounds, complete with beautiful floral displays, a gigantic, life-size recreation of the classic Mad Hatter's Tea Party, scarecrows, dancing flowers and much more.

There will also be a silent disco, held from 9pm each night, and a Phrased and Confused stage, where auteurs and musicians and poets alike will be indulging the audience with a little bit of wordplay fun. Moreover, each night the stage will turn into a wind powered film tent, with films for the whole family.

You want more? SSW have got it - there's a the eFestivals Comedy Tent, a Kidzone for, well, kids to play in, Amnesty yoga sessions (for those who want an escape from the madding crowd) and even Inertia flat landing bike displays, which will shock and awe the crowds. Just a couple more reasons why we stand apart from the others...

PHRASED AND CONFUSED RETURN FOR SSW 09!

01 May

Over three days, the tent will be serving up a whole host of wordy delights – as songs, poems, readings, conversations and whatever else you want to call it, in their mission to showcase some of the finest songwriters and poets about. And this year they’ve got the cream of the crop, with sets by Woodpigeon, Jeremy Warmsley, Stuart Silver, Inua Ellams, Sound of Rum, Generation Txt, Joshua Idehen and Beth Jeans Houghton.  More artists will be announced soon so keep checking back here for more details…

THIRD ROUND OF SSW ACTS ANNOUNCED!

16 Apr

…and they are real peaches. Behold! Quirk pop heroes Mystery Jets are playing just before The Streets on Friday, for a night of unpredictable fun. Ubiquitous Brooklyn hipsters Chairlift will also hit the Leicester stage, as will Broken Records, aka Glasgow’s answer to Arcade Fire (what? They really are that good), Port O’ Brien and their heart breakingly frayed strain of folk, and crunchy rock behemoths Future of the Left. You want new, emergent talent? Check out the wonky disco shapes of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool (the name alone warrants the price of admission), the pastoral folk pop of The Yellow Moon Band, and the delicate, achingly fragile warblings of Devon’s own John Smith. And you want cast-iron heroes? Then check out Horace Andy and Ashley Beedle and Hugh Cornwell (you may know him from a little band called The Stranglers) in rare live action. Seriously, it does not get much better than this people. Well, except for the next announcement, that is…hee! Until then…

Next round of announcements!

Next Spoonful of Musical Delights!

16 Mar

Saint Etienne are set to light up Summer Sundae on Saturday evening with a greatest hits set. Blending Italian house piano magic, French disko bleeps & beats, Swedish flair and German adventure, it’s sophisticated, blissed-out dance music at its finest.

From one legend to some legendary acts in the making; Noisettes renowned for their lavish stage shows, Micachu is a precociously talented newcomer, tipped by Radio 1 as ‘one to watch’ Dan Black, The Joy Formidable has NME in love with their irresistible 20-something indie pop, and James Yuill, whose bucolic folk has drawn comparisons to the likes of Jose Gonzales who starred in last year’s festivities!

Singer songwriters will also be making their mark. Talented tunesmith Karima Francis picked by Observer Music Monthly as one of the top 10 acts to watch of 2009, British songwriter Frank Turner delivers songs in the same rich vein as Billy Brag, while Teitur is a songwriter whose wry and quirkily observed melodies are certainly not to be missed. Meanwhile, Woodpigeon have been touted as Calgary’s answer to Sufjan Stevens.

In addition, Ninjatune’s The Qemists inject a heavy dose of drum ‘n’ bass, instrumental post-rock dance hybrid 65daysofstatic create something altogether more cerebral, Oi Va Voi have always been prepared to take risks and rip up the rule, while Jim Jones Revue and whirling dervish Imelda May let the good times roll with their high octane psychobilly and rock & roll shows.

Early Bird Tickets are still available until March 31st so get in quickly to take advantage of the biggest, most exciting Summer Sundae Weekender to date

Headliners announced

23 Feb

To kick off proceedings in high style, everyone’s favourite Brummie rapper Mike Skinner, aka The Streets is set to get the Weekender off to a rousing start with his distinctive blend of pop suss, urban cool and lyrical genius. Another musical heavyweight arrives on Saturday, when the much-loved legends The Charlatans return to the live arena to reclaim their shiny pop throne. And, to round things off, Sunday sees not one, but two amazing headliners – The Zutons, who have long enthralled audiences with their beautifully whimsical, madly addictive art-pop, and folk maestro Bon Iver, who crafted one of the most heartbreakingly perfect albums of 2008 with “For Emma, Forever Ago”. And that’s before we even get to the other brilliant bands we can announce – the white hot and rapidly ascendant First Aid Kit, Beardyman, Baddies and Kabeedies. Yes indeed, almost makes you wish it was August already, doesn’t it…
